Meet Your Tutor:
Stuart Davies

Stuart Davies...

UK born Stuart is a professional artist, designer and photographer.

A student of fine art and graphic design...

At Eastbourne School of Art and Design he studied drawing, painting, photography, print-making, typography and art history.

A 'natural photocopier'...

In the early part of his career, he was considered skilled enough to be legitimately employed as a 'legal forger' for a company that produced copies of old masters. He found this was an excellent way to understand the methods of artists such as Vermeer, Degas, and Monet in particular.

Country Life Magazine and Geographical Magazine...

After a period of teaching, and working as a freelance designer, Stuart was appointed as Art Editor and Design Editor of Country Life Magazine. Twelve years later he was head-hunted by Geographical Magazine to become their Art Director.

France...

Stuart always wanted to live in France, and, in 2003 the dream came true. Says Stuart "It's the light – if you are an artist, you'll know what I mean."

His favourite medium? Stuart is unequivocal "All of them!"

Teaching...

Stuart is a patient and gentle teacher who passes on his extensive knowledge and immense skill with calm efficiency. He says "I believe that everyone can be taught to draw and paint to a certain level. Once you know the 'trade secrets' it becomes quite simple. Also, I believe that people are more receptive to learn if you communicate in a manner that doesn't intimidate them."

Stuart's artwork covers such diverse subjects as:

Current projects...

When not taking classes here, Stuart is employed as a book designer for a UK publisher, and designs up to 25 books per month.

He lives near Sers, in the Charente, and is currently building an exhibition of his work.
